The US East (Northern Virginia) was the first region to start Amazon Web Services (AWS), and over the past few years it has been a huge growth and adoption of customers. AWS, which now organizes active customers from start -up businesses to large businesses, has constantly expanded the infrastructure and capacity of the US East (Northern Virginia). The US East (Northern Virginia) consists of six availability zones, which provides customers with increased redundancy and the ability to archite highly advanced applications.
Today, we announce that in the US East (Northern Virginia), a new availability zone in Maryland, located in Maryland, Maryland, will be added in 2026. This new availability zone will be associated with other accessibility areas of high bandwidth, low-cover network connection over a reserved, fully reduced fiber. The upcoming Maryland availability zone will also help to promote rapid growth of the AI generative load and advanced computing stress in the US East (Northern Virginia).
All areas of availability are physically separated in a meaningful distance area, many kilometers (km) from any other available zone, although all are up to 100 km (60 miles) apart. The network power is sufficient to achieve synchronous replication between the availability zones in Maryland and Virginia with the US East (Northern Virginia) region. If your application is divided into multiple accessibility areas, your workload is better insulated and protected from such power outages, lightning strikes, tornadoes, earthquakes and more.
With this announcement, the AWS now has four new regions – New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Tai -wan and the European Sovereign Cloud AWS – and 13 of the upcoming new available zones.
Geographic information for a new availability zone
In March, we provided more detailed visibility for lease of all AWS areas and available areas. We have updated the AWS Regions and Availbibility Zones that reflect new geographical information for this upcoming Maryland availability zone. As shown in the next screenshot, the infrastructure for the upcoming availability zone will be placed in Maryland,, U.S.A.for the American East (North Virginia) us-east-1
Region.
You can continue to use this geographical information to select the availability zones that are in line with your regulatory, observance and operational requirements.
After launching the new availability zone, it will be available along with other US EAST availability zones (Northern Virginia) via AWS Management Console, AWS commands (AWS CLI) and AWS SDK.
Stay tuned
In 2026, we are planning to create this new zone available in the US East (Northern Virginia) in general in 2026. As usual, see the regional reports of the AWS News blog to be among the first to know when the new Avilably zone is open!
